The Friends of Government House Gardens Society

The Friends of the Government House Gardens Society (the Friends) is a registered, but not a charitable, Society. Members may volunteer for the Society, but this is not a requirement for membership.

The Friends are governed by a Constitution and managed by a Board of Directors. Major decisions about the development and maintenance of the gardens are made in cooperation with Government House and the Friends.

The Friends were formed in 1992 “to improve, preserve and enhance the grounds and gardens of Government House and to encourage the active participation of the people of British Columbia in their development and maintenance, in cooperation with the Province of British Columbia and Government House, for continuing use and enjoyment.”

The Friends of the Government House Gardens Society has grown from a small group of dedicated volunteers to a membership of 275, approximately half of whom spend many hours working in the gardens. Non-gardeners work in areas such as archives, library, photography, publications, greeting cards, administration, tour guides, education and special events.

The Friends operate year round with the greater part of the gardening work occurring March through October. All funds raised from memberships or fundraising events are channeled directly to improvements and maintenance of the gardens.
