Premier Clark, the Honourable Lance Finch, the Honourable Bill Barisoff, Members of the Advisory Council, recipients and guests:
This afternoon you were recognized for your service to British Columbia and for your good citizenship. Tonight we share a meal with you to honour your achievement and to thank you for answering the call to service. After tonight you will return to your family, friends and colleagues. You will become not just an ambassador for the Order of BC, but an ambassador for the value of public service. Just as this award recognizes excellence in citizenship, it also promotes it to others thereby improving even further the great province of British Columbia.
Tony Robbins, a well-known motivational speaker, says that there are three steps to creating your future. The first is to think about your situation and to come up with ideas. The next step is to speak about your ideas to others, to flush out your plans, to give power to your ideas. The final step is to take action, to actually begin to take those steps necessary to bring your thoughts and ideas into reality. The first two steps are not always easy but necessary stepping stones on our path to our objectives. It's the final step that is the most difficult. As Bill Cosby said, "Noah's neighbours must have laughed at his construction of an ark for animals." This third step can be lonely and full of doubt. It requires determination and a strong desire to succeed. Others might come along to help and others might come along to only offer critical analysis. Leadership is about continuing on your chosen path to the bitter end because it's necessary to do so. This kind of tenacity is transformative. It creates energy in others through conduct.
