Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia

39 Canadian Brigade Group Mess Dinner

Saturday, October 1, 2011
Victoria, British Columbia

CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY

Colonel Gagné, Officers and guests of 39 Brigade:

Allow me to welcome each and every one of you to Government House. 39 Canadian Brigade Group, the largest army formation in BC, enjoys a long and honourable reputation and it is my honour to host tonight's dinner

I am aware that your Annual General Assembly is here in Victoria and I trust that your time here will prove interesting and enjoyable. Annual meetings afford you an opportunity to recollect energy and make plans for the future. I wish you every success in this year's meeting.

39 Brigade is a reservist organization designed to augment and support the necessary task of Canadian defence. I am aware that this Brigade, although part-time, has greatly contributed to both overseas Canadian operations as well as domestic Canadian security services, including fighting forest fires. Your service to Canadian security is not only essential but also difficult to quantify in terms of its magnitude and importance to Canadians at large.

The importance of Canada's readiness to respond to external military threats cannot be overstated; in today's ever-changing world we must also stand on guard to face the possibility of internal threats due to terrorism and even unexpected public outbursts of violence. We are also reminded daily of the threat of impending earthquakes, hurricanes and such things that are occurring in other nations.

I know that as reservists you make personal sacrifices that allow you to pursue training exercises on weekends and even during your vacation times, away from family and friends. For all that you provide, and all that you do on behalf of all British Columbians, thank you.

Honorary Aides-de-Camp:
- Inspector Bob Blacker
