Remarks by the Honourable Steven L. Point, OBC
Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia

Canadian Museum of Flight Annual Members' Day

Saturday, September 18, 2010
Langley, British Columbia

Mr. Gord Wintrup, President, Canadian Museum of Flight, members, volunteers and guests:

Thank you for inviting me to participate today. Museums play an important role in the education of Canadians, particularly youth. Understanding our past is much more than simply reading about past events in school. Although we can never fully understand the intricacies of every historical event, museums bring us much closer by raising awareness, by giving us actual pieces of history to examine and study.

Our past does not always define our future, but it can give us a better appreciation of present circumstances and help guide decision makers in terms of future developments. The airplane, like may scientific discoveries and inventions, has made our world a smaller place, has given new meaning to inter-state conflict and has added a totally new dimension when it comes to studying the earth.

Our pilots and planes have played a critical role World Wars. It is clear to me that, but for the effective bombing of important enemy strongholds in Europe, WWII may have had a much different outcome.

Thank you to those Canadians who, with their passion and vision, have created for us an amazing glimpse of our aviation history here in Langley. Without you wonderful volunteers a valuable piece of our collective history would be lost to future generations.

Honorary Aides-de-Camp:
- Captain Don Bentley
