Remarks by the Honourable Steven L. Point, OBC
Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia
British Columbia Police and Peace Officers' Memorial Service
Sunday, September 27, 2009
Vancouver, British Columbia
Families of the fallen, special guests, officers on parade, ladies and gentleman:
Through the year we live our daily lives enjoying this wonderful country. Certainly there are times when the peace and order is disturbed, but for the most part we Canadians enjoy a high level of "peaceful existence" owing largely to the service of important members of society: our police and peace officers.
Often the mere presence of uniformed officers is enough to stave off misconduct, but there are times when these same men and women must willingly place themselves in very dangerous circumstances in order to preserve life, peace and order. They do this on behalf of all of us.
We are here today to commemorate those officers who, in the line of duty, lost their lives. Their sacrifice will not be forgotten. Every family is a unit that celebrates together. When one person is missing that unit must carry on while enduring their loss. Such is the circumstance for the families of these fallen officers; their sacrifice is one of giving through loss. Today we remember these amazing people and their families. We give thanks.
On behalf of Her Majesty and on behalf of all British Columbians, thank you. Your sacrifice will not be forgotten. I thank all of you for coming today: families of the of the fallen officers, visiting police departments from the United States, all of our uniformed officers and guests – thank you.
