Government House Crest

Remarks by the Honourable Steven L. Point, OBC
Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia

Official Opening of the Beacon Park Pavilion

Sunday, June 28, 2009
Sidney, British Columbia

Congratulations to Sidney. This is a very attractive facility that will serve you for years to come. Someone asked me once, what does "community" mean? At that time I was baffled. It seems too easy for serious thought at first, but I had difficulty finding words to describe or prescribe its true meaning. Several months later it struck me that a community is, of course, a group of people living in close proximity, sharing the same local facilities, but most importantly, were connected with one another. They were not strangers passing each other on the street but rather were committed, involved people who are connected by a common history and share a love for a particular town or place.

People get connected through community activities at centres like this one. We create a sense of togetherness by sharing time together at community events. I know it cost a great deal of money to build this magnificent structure and I know that everyone in Sidney is very appreciative for the financial support from the government, but I know that as this facility gets used, its true value will emerge gradually, which is the capacity to create a sense of community by coming together at this centre.

Once again, congratulations to the Mayor and council of Sidney and to all of its citizens on this wonderful accomplishment.
