Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia
Franz Schubert Society Concert
Friday, September 26, 2008
Victoria, British Columbia
Welcome to the members of the Franz Schubert Society of Victoria. I am very pleased to host this evening concert and reception. Through the past 150 years I am sure that talented classical musicians have blessed these halls many times and I believe tonight will be another example of this long tradition at Government House. I welcome the opportunity to help you to “…drive a renewed interest in classical music among younger audiences through classroom presentations in general and Schubert’s music in particular.”
Classical music, like most forms of music, is a universal form of communication that invokes in the listener images of heaven, feelings of awe and amazement, and fills the imagination with visions of creation and perfection. Our modern society is growing ever more complex and at times challenging for our youth. Classical music allows us a break from this new world and its many stressful moments. We must stop now and then, listen to the great artists like Schubert, and once again feel the presence of our very souls in his music. Thank you all for coming tonight and please enjoy your evening at Government House.
