National Arts Centre Orchestra Reception

Thursday, October 30, 2008
Victoria, British Columbia

Good evening ladies and gentlemen. I wish to acknowledge and thank the National Arts Centre Orchestra and its director, Mr. Pinchas Zukerman, for choosing Government House for tonight’s reception. Welcome also to the National Arts Centre VIPs including members of the Board of Trustees, the Victoria Symphony Orchestra, and especially the many generous donors to musical arts here in Victoria.

The musical arts form an integral part of our Canadian society. Whereas science and technology bring new innovation and scientific advancements that add to our quality of life, the Arts bring a special dimension to our world that has to do with our soul. Music has a way of uplifting us from our daily lives and bringing us together in a way that allows us to share in the grandeur of the human experience. I think it brings us closer to the power of creation and thus improves our lives by simply listening to music. A composer has the power to convey emotional messages through music. There is no communication barrier nor is there any way to misinterpret the message.

I understand that the National Arts Centre Orchestra is scheduled to perform in Victoria on November 1st as part of its 2008 tour. Gwen and I look forward to this event with great anticipation. Thank you all for coming tonight and once again, welcome to Government House.
