Government House Crest

Remarks by the Honourable Steven L. Point, OBC
Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia

Hans Helgesen Elementary School Visit And
Button Blanket Ceremony

Thursday, May 22, 2008
Sooke, British Columbia

I would like to thank Jacqueline Glendale for inviting me here today to participate in this blanket ceremony. I would also like to acknowledge Principal Julia Sahota, Chief Russ Chipps of Beacher Bay First Nation, Beacher Bay Elders, students and guests. Thank you to all who participated in organizing this ceremony today and bringing us together. I understand that there will be a feast and some presentations; I am sure there has been a lot of preparation, thanks to all.

Let’s discuss the importance of reading. Watching TV is nice, and going to movies is great, but reading a good book is exceptional because you can go back to it at any time, you can share it with others, you can go to any place on earth through books. Reading is good for the brain because it forces you to use your imagination in ways that produce more brain activity. This is important as you get older, believe me!

As Lieutenant Governor, I get to travel a lot and attend many school functions like this one today. I am pleased to be here with you and I have a book to present to the school for your library. I hope that each of you will sign it out. I have placed an electric monitor inside the book to see who reads it!

Congratulations to Chief Russ Chipps on getting the button blanket. It is so nice for our leaders in the community to come to the school in support of the students. Thank you Chief Chipps. I would also like to thank the drummers, Scott Sam and Toby Joseph, for the songs. Bringing in the culture like this makes these gatherings very special for us all. Thank you.
