Remarks by the Honourable Steven L. Point, OBC
Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia

Pacific Region Department Of Fisheries And Oceans
Regimental Banquet And Awards

Wednesday, May 14, 2008
Whistler, British Columbia

Thanks to Mr. Herb Redekopp, Conservation and Protection Chief of the Lower Fraser Area, for the invitation to attend and participate in this most important banquet and awards night. I understand that the Peace Officer Exemplary Service Medal, created in 2004, recognizes peace officers who have served in an exemplary manner, characterized by good conduct, industry and efficiency. Fishery Officers, who are designated Peace Officers, represent the enforcement arm of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and enforce the Fisheries Act and regulation.

Congratulations to all of the recipients. I know first hand exactly how risky your job can be especially during high tension, as I was a Peace Officer once upon a time. There can be opposition from fisherman on the open seas or in the swift rivers of BC. Peace Officers at times face unruly, angry, and unpredictable behaviour, but must face this in a professional manner and balance the safety of all concerned. This is a difficult task. The Fishery Officers in my view face very difficult situations sometimes because fisheries, generally, are not a simple matter, but rather are fraught with complex issues that are at times not readily understood by the general public. I think we as a society often will vent our collective frustrations at the very ones whose mandate it is to protect the fisheries, and I must say this situation is unfortunate. I would like to extend to everyone my thanks for your continued efforts in the protection and conservation of our most important resource, the fisheries of BC.

As the world changes environmentally, politically and demographically, one thing must never change - our collective desire to preserve our natural heritage, the salmon, the shellfish and all of the fisheries for future generations. We are, after all, only passing through this world; we must endeavour to practice the best form of stewardship possible.

On behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and on behalf of all the citizens of BC, thank you for your energy, for your commitment, for your dedication to the protection and conservation of our fisheries in BC.
