Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia

Canada Day Poster Challenge Reception

Friday, May 9, 2008
Vancover, British Columbia

Thank you to Warren Smith, President of the Celebrate Canada Committee for BC, for the invitation to attend and participate in this very unique event. I understand that 2047 posters were submitted from young people throughout BC for the 2008 Canada Day Poster Challenge. This is a special presentation of four young BC artists whose work has been selected to be representative of the submissions received provincially in the Canada Day Poster Challenge. Allow me to thank all those participants in this year’s poster challenge.

After commencing my duties as the 28th Lieutenant Governor of BC, I was asked what my programs might be for my term in office. I decided that I wanted to help youth development as one of four initiatives. I firmly believe that life affords us many opportunities to achieve our greatest potentials as people, but in order to do this we must get off the couch and get involved. Life is not a spectator’s sport, it is doing. It is in these daily activities, these small things that when one steps back a little you get to see the journey that we call our life. Our life has a meaning and a purpose. This discovery has to be made by each of us in our own way. Once that purpose has been found, we must pursue that objective. It is in that journey that we achieve greatness, not in the prizes won or the trophies taken home, but rather the step-by-step progress made in our life. In each step are lessons. Lessons that we can either ignore or we can try and figure out and then apply them to our lives. Watch out for the pitfalls: laziness, doubt, fear, ignorance. There are others, but you will learn to find them and avoid them.

As the representative of Her Majesty The Queen, I offer my warmest congratulations to all the youth here today, and especially to those who have been selected today.
