Remarks by the Honourable Steven L. Point, OBC
Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia

BC Book Prizes Gala

Saturday, April 26, 2008
Vancover, British Columbia

I am honoured to welcome writers, readers, and members of the literary community to celebrate the achievements of our authors at the annual BC Book Prizes Gala, and I am proud to carry on the legacy of my predecessor with the presentation of the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Literary Excellence.

This year we celebrate one of British Columbia’s shining stars and one of Canada’s most important literary figures, Dr. Gary Geddes, as the recipient of the 2008 Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Literary Excellence. Dr. Geddes’ elegant poetry and prose explore the human condition through the lens of social justice. He has also worked tirelessly as a mentor to young writers. We are very fortunate to have such a gifted humanitarian to call “one of our own.”

British Columbia is known for its world class scenery. With all this beauty to feed our imagination, it is no surprise that we have such remarkable writers among us. As the representative of Her Majesty The Queen in British Columbia, and on behalf of all the people of this great province, I extend my heartiest congratulations to those being honoured at this year's Awards Gala. Thank you for sharing your tremendous gifts and continuing to inspire us!

Honorary Aides-de-Camp:
- Inspector Bob Blacker
