Government House Crest

Remarks by the Honourable Steven L. Point, OBC
Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia

Knights Of Columbus’ Annual
State Convention

Saturday, April 26, 2008
Surrey, British Columbia

Thank you to Mr. Dan O’Hara, State Deputy of the Knights of Columbus BC and Yukon State Council, for his invitation to speak here today. I would also like to acknowledge distinguished guests, Bishop David Monroe of Kamloops, Bishop Ken Nowakowsk, David Bellendier, Terry Kidwell and Dave Jones.

It is my honour to be here with you. It was just a few years ago that I was asked to join the Knights of Columbus through my membership of our small church, St. Theresa in Sardis. I am proud of my affiliation with the Knights of Columbus. It is a strong and vibrant force in Canada that provides aid to the less fortunate members of our society. With a growing membership now in the millions and in several countries abroad, this organization will continue to be a tremendous source of hope and fellowship to millions more people around the globe.

The government of the day does provide great relief where and when it can to our citizens in need. However, government resources are not endless and it is impossible for the government to be all things to all people. It is largely due to organizations like the Knights, who are raising money for hospitals, for schools, for programs, that the gaps in programs and services are fully satisfied.

Your tireless efforts at times may appear to be thankless, but let me assure you that your great works do not go unnoticed. On behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, allow me to thank you for your service, for your energy and for your dedication to improving the lives of us all. Your work is a great credit to all Canadians and I, for one, am very happy to be affiliated with the Knights of Columbus. Thank you.

Honorary Aides-de-Camp:
- Lieutenant-Colonel Romano Acconci
