Remarks by the Honourable Steven L. Point, OBC
Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia
Fairfield Artists Studio Tour
Opening Gala
Friday, April 25, 2008
Victoria, British Columbia
I would like to thank Joan Kotarski for inviting me to participate in this Gala event. I would also like to acknowledge John Campos, President of the Fairfield Community Association, Victoria Councillor Chris Coleman, and artist Robert Amos.
I understand that this is the 8th Fairfield Artists Studio Tour and the fourth season that the Fairfield Community Association has been involved in the Tour. This event encourages community economic development within the artists’ community and Fairfield as a whole.
My sources reveal that Art is the expression of creativity and imagination. Creating Art is an act which uses the human creative impulse and which has meaning beyond simple description. Art may be understood as relating to creativity, aesthetics and the generation of emotion. John Cheever once said that Art is the triumph over chaos. Beverly Sills of NBC called Art the signature of civilizations.
For me, Art is the use of mediums such as sculpture, dance, music, and many more, to express something that words alone cannot. Every time I hear the national anthem sung by children, it evokes memories and emotions that simply make me feel good. Throughout history, great works of art have come to the aid of all of the great religions of the world, every government, and every generation to express thoughts and beliefs that in and of themselves are so grand and important, that music, painting, or sculpture must speak on their behalf. The arts for me is the conscience of every generation, that voice speaking of greater truths and values that long endure beyond that generation.
On behalf of Her Majesty The Queen, I wish you a most successful event. Thank you.
