Remarks by the Honourable Steven L. Point, OBC
Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia
Union Club Dinner
Saturday, April 19, 2008
Victoria, British Columbia
First, let me thank the President of the Union Club, Mr. Swan, for extending to me the honour of membership. This evening will be memorable for other reasons, too. First, my wife and I, on Monday, April 21, will celebrate our 36th wedding anniversary. And, just a few weeks ago now, we were blessed with the birth of our 12th grandchild on March 28th. Life is good.
I am most pleased to be invited to be a member at the Union Club of BC. It is an elegant Victorian landmark with a unique blend of historic charm and modern sophistication. The Club has been home to generations of leaders in commerce, industry and government. Members have helped to determine the economic and political course of the city, and province and indeed the country, since the Club’s founding in 1879 - 12 years after confederation.
Over the coming years, I am sure that my agenda of events will offer opportunities in which to utilize the many services available at this most unique and amazing facility. In the many functions and duties appertained to the office of Lieutenant Governor, it is nice to have an additional venue in which to meet and entertain my many guests that come to Victoria. More importantly, it will be my sanctuary for an evening of relaxation away from the bright camera lights from time to time.
I look forward to the coming years with a sense of gratitude for the warm welcome you have extended to me and on behalf of myself and Gwen, thank you.
