Government House Crest

Remarks by the Honourable Steven L. Point, OBC
Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia

BC Teachers’ Institute On Parliamentary Democracy

Wednesday, April 16, 2008
Victoria, British Columbia

The Honourable Bill Barisoff and the Honourable Shirley Bond; teachers; and guests:

Welcome to Government House. Thank you for your participation in this important program. I understand that 17 teachers from across BC have been selected to spend four days at the Parliament Buildings, enhancing their knowledge and understanding of the province’s parliamentary system. The object of the institute is to promote discussion and critical inquiry into key issues while sharing and developing new ideas, resources and methods for teaching about parliamentary democracy in relation to BC’s social studies curriculum.

I trust that your four days in Victoria will prove worthwhile. Professional development is everyone’s responsibility because it keeps us current, renews our energies and interest, and introduces us to new people and ideas. Teaching, in my view, is one of the most valuable contributions anyone can make for society. Learning about government and how it functions is vital to a clear teaching strategy. My wish is that more students and teachers could come to Victoria to witness first hand their government in action.

As I travel around the province visiting elementary and secondary schools, I am asked the same questions about my role as Lieutenant Governor. When our youth take their place as voting members of society it is imperative that they have a basic knowledge of the roles and function of government. The freedoms that are enshrined in our constitution are rendered meaningless if they are not understood in the context of good governance.

Now, I should not get carried away. This is not a lecture podium and you are not my students. I do wish to extend to you my thanks, on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and all British Columbians, for your commitment to education and your own professional development. Thank you.

Honorary Aides-de-Camp:
- Superintendent Jeff Lott
